What Does a BESS Project Manager Do?
A BESS Project Manager oversees the full lifecycle of battery energy storage projects — from site acquisition and permitting through EPC contracting, construction, commissioning, and commercial operation. They serve as the primary interface between developers, utilities, contractors, equipment vendors, and offtakers, keeping complex, multi-stakeholder projects on schedule and within budget.
As the BESS market matures across ERCOT, CAISO, PJM, and other ISO markets, experienced project managers are among the most sought-after professionals in the industry. A skilled BESS PM understands not just construction management, but the nuances of interconnection processes, BESS-specific commissioning requirements, NFPA 855 compliance, and the operational characteristics of lithium-ion battery systems.
BESS Project Managers typically work for independent power producers, utilities, developers, EPC contractors, or O&M service providers. The role demands technical literacy combined with strong commercial acumen and the ability to manage competing priorities across long project timelines.
