What Does a BESS Project Manager Do?

A BESS Project Manager oversees the full lifecycle of battery energy storage projects — from site acquisition and permitting through EPC contracting, construction, commissioning, and commercial operation. They serve as the primary interface between developers, utilities, contractors, equipment vendors, and offtakers, keeping complex, multi-stakeholder projects on schedule and within budget.

As the BESS market matures across ERCOT, CAISO, PJM, and other ISO markets, experienced project managers are among the most sought-after professionals in the industry. A skilled BESS PM understands not just construction management, but the nuances of interconnection processes, BESS-specific commissioning requirements, NFPA 855 compliance, and the operational characteristics of lithium-ion battery systems.

BESS Project Managers typically work for independent power producers, utilities, developers, EPC contractors, or O&M service providers. The role demands technical literacy combined with strong commercial acumen and the ability to manage competing priorities across long project timelines.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Manage project schedules, budgets, risk registers, and change orders from NTP through COD
  • Coordinate interconnection studies, utility agreements, and grid code compliance
  • Lead EPC contractor selection, negotiation, and performance management
  • Oversee BESS system procurement — battery packs, PCS, BMS, EMS/SCADA
  • Drive commissioning, performance testing, and PTO milestone tracking
  • Interface with AHJs, fire marshals, and building departments on NFPA 855 compliance
  • Manage landowner relationships, easements, and site access agreements
  • Report project status, financials, and risk to senior leadership and investors
  • Coordinate with O&M teams for operational handover and warranty management
  • Support project finance, lender diligence, and independent engineer reviews

Key Skills & Expertise

  • Utility-scale BESS or solar+storage project management
  • ISO interconnection processes (ERCOT, CAISO, PJM, MISO)
  • EPC contract management and claims avoidance
  • NFPA 855, IFC, and local fire code requirements
  • LFP and NMC battery chemistry fundamentals
  • Proficiency in Procore, Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent
  • Financial modeling and budget tracking
  • Commissioning and acceptance test protocols

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • 5+ years of project management experience in utility-scale energy storage or renewable energy
  • PMP certification preferred; PE license a plus
  • Experience managing projects of 20 MW / 80 MWh or larger
  • Strong understanding of interconnection agreements and utility tariffs
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed

Salary Range

$110,000 – $185,000

BESS Project Managers typically earn $110,000–$185,000 annually depending on project scale, experience, and geography. Senior PMs at major developers or contractors can exceed $200,000 with bonuses and equity.
