What Does a BESS Commissioning Manager Do?

A BESS Commissioning Manager leads the end-to-end commissioning function for battery energy storage projects — managing teams of commissioning engineers and technicians, coordinating with EPC contractors and OEMs, and ensuring that projects achieve commercial operation on schedule and in compliance with all technical, regulatory, and contractual requirements.

Unlike a Commissioning Engineer who is hands-on with individual systems, the Commissioning Manager operates at a program level — developing commissioning standards, managing multiple simultaneous project commissioning efforts, interfacing with project management and development teams, and serving as the primary technical authority during grid integration and performance testing.

As BESS project pipelines have expanded dramatically, experienced Commissioning Managers capable of scaling commissioning operations across dozens of projects per year are among the most valuable professionals in the industry.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of commissioning engineers and technicians across multiple projects
  • Develop and maintain standardized commissioning plans, procedures, and documentation
  • Coordinate with EPC contractors on construction turnover and commissioning readiness
  • Interface with OEMs, utilities, and ISOs on grid integration testing and protection settings
  • Review and approve FAT, SAT, and integrated commissioning test results
  • Manage commissioning schedules, resource allocation, and subcontractor coordination
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA 855, OSHA, and project-specific safety requirements
  • Report commissioning status and risks to project management and executive leadership
  • Drive continuous improvement of commissioning processes and lessons learned
  • Support contract negotiations with commissioning subcontractors

Key Skills & Expertise

  • BESS commissioning program management — multiple simultaneous projects
  • Team leadership and commissioning subcontractor management
  • Deep technical knowledge of battery, PCS, BMS, and EMS systems
  • Grid integration and protection testing coordination with utilities
  • NFPA 855, UL 9540, and relevant safety standards
  • Contract management and quality assurance
  • Risk management and schedule recovery

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in BESS or energy commissioning, including 2+ years in a leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience managing commissioning across multiple simultaneous large-scale projects
  • Strong knowledge of utility interconnection and protection requirements
  • OSHA 30 required; PMP preferred

Salary Range

$130,000 – $210,000

BESS Commissioning Managers typically earn $130,000–$210,000+ with bonuses. Those managing large national portfolios or employed by top-tier developers often see total compensation well above this range.
