What Does a BESS O&M Manager Do?
A BESS Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Manager oversees the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of battery energy storage systems after they reach commercial operation. They manage O&M teams, service contracts, corrective and preventive maintenance programs, and performance optimization — ensuring that assets meet their availability and performance guarantees.
BESS O&M is a rapidly professionalizing field. As early-generation systems age and newer projects come online at scale, operators are developing sophisticated asset management practices informed by real operational data. O&M Managers must balance cost management with performance optimization, leveraging remote monitoring, predictive analytics, and OEM service relationships.
O&M Managers may work for asset owners, independent power producers, third-party O&M service providers, or utilities. Those managing large portfolios — hundreds of megawatts across multiple sites — play a central role in the financial performance of the assets.
